God Save the Queen by Kate Locke
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
A fun and engaging book that kept me entertained without being the next best thing to sliced bread. Xandra is a halvie - a half-human, half-vampire in a world of aristos (royalty, natch) inhabiting an alternate Britain, where Queen Victoria is a vampire who's ruled for almost two centuries. Aristos rule, halvies protect them, and humans hate them both, but are strangely attracted to their pseudo-celebs (paparazzi culture can't be avoided even in urban fantasy, it seems).
Xandra's sister Dede appears to have killed herself, which leads to much angsting, intrigue, bewilderment and a romance with the Alpha of the were(wolves).
It's no Shakespeare, but it has its moments, mainly during the fight scenes. Yes, some plot points are telegraphed from miles away, but that's okay in this style of story; I'm not expecting anything to educate me or mess with my head.
A good weekend read if you just want to relax and enjoy some paranormal action.
