Adventure Girl is deathly afraid of dogs, due to a couple of incidents in her childhood. While I don't understand people who don't like animals, I can understand the debilitating fear of something, and I think she's held up pretty well when visiting those of us who have huge galoots like Great Danes and the like - not to mention dogs' delightful habit of sticking their noses where the sun don't shine.
But Adventure Girl has gone one step further. It's likely that Deafnoy will be getting a Seeing-Eye Dog in the next three years. Well, the docs always told him that he'd be blind by the time he reaches 40, so no surprise there; I guess it just shows how young we think we are that the timeframe came as a real surprise.
The point is: a dog. In the house. A dog that will be with him for the foreseeable future. A dog that will be part of the family. This is a terrifying prospect for one who is so scared of canines. So what does she do?
She decides she's going to get a puppy herself, now, a puppy to train and grow to love and be her friend. A puppy that will one day grow into a big dog and will accompany her (them) on hikes and scuba diving sessions and the office and ... places. A puppy that she'll train to be a therapy dog to offer comfort to the wounded of soul, like her.
She's going the extra mile for someone she loves, she's facing her fear to make sure she can help and understand when he's fearful because he's lost his sight.
She's my ex-husband's wife and pretty bolshy most of the time, but damn - I have never admired anyone as much as I have right this minute.
